In my very first year in business (2012), I made 6+ figures, secured some brand events as a speaker and build a lucrative 1:1 therapy business, BUT I never felt like I had enough money…
I was very ambitious, I had high expectations of myself, and I quite honestly, I worked myself to the bone…
But, I learned a lot about money, to name a few things:
- how to make it quickly
- lose it just as fast
- go into debt due to unexpected tax bills
- bill large amounts of money
- receive large amounts of money
- chase payments (begrudgingly)
- and price myself as expensive in a relatively unknown marketplace at that time…
These are some of the things I learned along the way – 7 things I learned when I didn’t have ENOUGH money…
1. Be mindful of acting like a jealous lover and being too “controlling” – because for some of us, money triggers feeling of being “unsafe” or “at risk” (and I can 100% relate to this one) we sometimes become super controlling around it. We start to track our spending, looking at our bank balance every day, monitor the flow, and squeeze it too tightly, scrutinising our spending and then judging ourselves for not making the progress faster. It all starts to feel heavy and a burden, and also anxiety provoking. Find a healthy balance.
2. Stop being a martyr, and accept your desire to want more money – it’s healthy to want more money, as humans we desire it because we’re here to expand, and money helps us do this. I’ve heard many excuses from people explaining why money isn’t important to them, and then challenging me on why I teach about it so much. It’s great to realise that money isn’t the only thing which needs attention in your life, OF COURSE it isn’t, but it IS needed. And if you’re not in financial flow right now, there’s something blocking you so at some point, you have to figure this out. You need money to buy things, to grow your business, to take care of your family. Why struggle? There’s nothing sexy about struggling, believe me, I’ve been there.
3. Money flows in when you have a reason for wanting more – why do you want more money? For years, I wanted more money to feel safe, to have it in my bank account so if anything happened, I’d be ok. And yes, I get this reason, but if this resonates with you, are you asking for money from a place of FEAR? As in, the fear of running out? It’s actually healthier to create a higher vision of a higher lifestyle which you can show money! Imagine money being your sugar daddy haha. So do you want extra money to have the space to be able to make important decisions? Do you want extra money to be able to take time off from work? Do you need to reset your energy and take time off when you need? Do you want 2 houses in different countries because it’s important to you to be in different creative spaces?
4. The biggest illusion out there is having the £10k “consistent“ months – money is energy, it comes and it goes. You are an emotional human being, NOT a robot, and it’s not possible to do the exact same things every month, and get the exact same results. It’s boring! So let go of that illusion. It’s also your ego who wants to see the proof of the numbers, not your true self. I’ve also been totally guilty of talking about this, as I did manage to create the illusive £10k months, but it takes time to set up, and you need passive income to do it (and a decent sized audience). Plus not every month will be at the £10k mark, some will be 7k, some 20k, embrace the ebbs and flows…
5. Freshen up your energy, like you change your sheets (as often as possible!) – when money flows into your business, it instantly boosts your energy. Money IS energy, so of course this is going to happen. You need fresh energy into your business to circulate, to boost your confidence, your morale, your motivation and most importantly, your SELF TRUST that you can, actually do this!! So open up to receive more financial energy into your business because it’s needed, not only for you, but for your customers and clients too. When you’re in a fresh energy, so are they…!
6. When you’re tired and drained, so is your money – when you’re someone who loves working (like me!) it’s not uncommon to get drained of energy, because you’re busy pouring all you have into your business, serving your clients, and loving being busy! It’s ok to love being busy btw, don’t shame yourself for liking it. Just know that when you’re drained and tired, it impacts your energy, and when your energy is low, so is your ability to make more money. Money is more likely to flow in when you’re flying…high vibration and feeling very energised…
7. This not-so-sexy part of money making (but very important) – I’ll take it back, this can be sexy, it just depends on how you frame it hehe. Learn to take good care of what you already have. NOT being controlling (as mentioned above) but learning to really, genuinely appreciate money and what you already have. Think of all the times when money has come into your life and helped you, maybe through parents or through lovers, or the lottery haha (a whole other conversation!) I’m pretty sure there have been many, many times. Think back and appreciate these times. It all helps when rebuilding a more healthier relationship with money.
